The countdown is on: Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai opens from to on Yumeshima Island. With a theme of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” this first-ever 100 % cash-free World Expo promises futuristic pavilions, a ring-shaped floating walkway, and six months of events that tech and travel media are already buzzing about.

Expo 2025 is the world’s first major event to ban physical cash on-site. Visitors must pay with any of the following:

  • Credit/Debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, JCB, UnionPay)
  • Contactless IC cards (Suica, ICOCA, PASMO, etc.)
  • QR/mobile wallets (PayPay, LINE Pay, Alipay, Apple/Google Pay)
  • Expo Prepaid Card — loadable at kiosks for guests who arrive without a card/phone

Pro tip: Top up your IC card before arriving to skip queues at the charging machines.
